Non-Energy Benefits (MBENEFITS)

Through its partnership with Econoler, ReCover is now the exclusive provider of non-energy benefits modelling using the MBENEFITS approach in Atlantic Canada. In addition to being offered as a stand-alone service, NEB identification and quantification will become a standard component of all ReCover investment-ready business cases delivered through its Building Transformation Program.

What are Non-Energy Benefits (NEBs)?

Non-Energy Benefits are the often-overlooked positive impacts of deep retrofits that don’t show up on a utility bill such as:

  • Improved safety and air quality at work, leading to less absenteeism
  • Improved product quality
  • Reduced unplanned production downtime
  • Improved employee and equipment productivity

As a result of more than 15 years of research and development, MBENEFITS can quantify up to 54 unique NEBs, which reveal the true value of your retrofit projects.

Why Include NEBs in Building Investment Decisions?

When NEBs are quantified and included in building investment decisions, the business case for implementation becomes much more obvious. Case studies have demonstrated that when NEBs are considered, pay back periods are, on average, three times shorter, and there are significantly higher internal rates of return (IRRs).

MBENEFITS Non-Energy Benefits (NEB) modelling services will launch soon. If you’d like to be notified when NEB services will be launched, you can join our NEB interest list.

FAQs

Non-Energy Benefits are the "hidden" advantages of a building retrofit that don't show up on a utility bill. While energy savings are the traditional focus, NEBs represent the operational, strategic, and human impacts of a project—such as increased employee productivity, lower maintenance costs, and reduced equipment downtime.

Every building is different, but common benefits include:

  • Operational: Reduced maintenance requirements and extended equipment life.
  • Human: Improved indoor air quality leading to higher occupant satisfaction and fewer sick days.
  • Strategic: Enhanced asset value, lower insurance premiums, and reduced carbon risk.

Not at all. While industrial facilities see massive gains in process efficiency, commercial and institutional building owners (like schools or office towers) benefit significantly from improved occupant health, reduced liability, and increased tenant retention.
